San José del Cabo
This lovely town sits on hills commanding postcard views of the Sea of Cortez. First founded in 1730 as a Jesuit mission, the easy going, relaxed quality of San Jose has inspired a fortunate few to make this unique part of Mexico a full or part-time home. The appealing heart of the town, with its charming palm, hibiscus and bougainvillea lined boulevard, is hidden from the main highway. Those who have discovered the town's gentleness jealously guard it so. The historic downtown area is a collection of 19th-century brick and adobe buildings, garden courtyards and cascading bougainvillea, steeped in history yet refreshingly unpretentious. The intimate downtown retains its colonial ambiance. Easily explored on foot, it's the kind of place where one encounters pleasant surprises when one is least expecting to. Plaza Mijares, the charming town square, is fronted by fountains and the Palacio Municipal and shaded by towering Indian laurel trees. Very inviting, it's the perfect place to cool your heels and relax a while. In San Jose there's always time to daydream. The ten block historic center is a delight to dine in the many fabulous restaurants, browse for arts and crafts, and collectibles for every pocketbook.
